===========================================================

WORKSHOP GOALS

Semantic technologies and, in particular, ontologies as formal, shareable representations of a domain of interest play an increasingly important role also for the design, development, and execution of user interfaces and more generally interactive systems. Semantic models can serve a number of different purposes in this context. They can be used as application or interface models in model-driven design, generation at design time as well as at runtime, and integration of user interfaces. Ontologies may enhance the visualization and interaction capabilities of user interfaces in various ways, e.g., by providing input assistance, intelligently clustering information, or adapting the user interface according to the user’s context.

Especially in the latter case, ontologies can be applied for representing the various kinds of context information for context-aware and adaptive systems. In particular, they have promised to provide a technique for representing external physical context factors such as location, time or technical parameters and ‘internal’ context such as user interest profiles or interaction context in a consistent, generalized manner. Owing to these properties, semantic models can also contribute to bridging gaps, e.g., between user models, context-aware interfaces and model-driven UI generation.

There is, therefore, a considerable potential for using semantic models as a basis for adaptive interactive systems. The range of potential adaptations is wide comprising, for example, context- and user-dependent recommendations, interactive assistance when performing application-specific tasks, adaptation of the application functionality, or adaptive retrieval support. Furthermore, a variety of reasoning and machine learning techniques exist, that can be employed to achieve adaptive system behavior.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

Following up the successful SEMAIS workshops at IUI 2010 and 2011, the workshop will address, among others, the following research issues:

– Improve UI quality by using semantic models.
– Representing user models, systems and their behavior, domain knowledge and interaction context by means of semantic models.
– Cognitively or neurally founded reasoning techniques such as activation spreading for semantic user models.
– Context-aware interaction based on semantic models.
– Adaptation strategies and techniques based on semantic models for e.g. recommender systems, adaptive retrieval, collaboration support systems and others.
– Generating explanations or visualizations to increase user confidence and support traceability.
– Scalability and performance of semantic model-based interactive systems.
– Semantic model-driven UI development.
– Generation and evolution of semantic models for interactive systems.
– Suitability of highly formal vs. light-weight semantic representations.
– Consuming linked data in user interfaces.
– Bringing ontologies together with current UI modeling languages, such as UsiXML.
– Evaluation approaches for adaptive interaction.

In this year’s workshop, we especially encourage contributions that
– focus on intuitive interaction
– dynamically adapt to the user and/or group over long time periods
– leverage information contained in Linked Open Data

Call For Papers: 9th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2012)

ESWC12 – 9th Extended Semantic Web Conference
May 27 – 31, 2012

Info at: http://2012.eswc-conferences.org/

The mission of ESWC is to bring together researchers and practitioners dealing with different aspects of semantic technologies. Building on its past success, ESWC is seeking to broaden its focus to span other relevant research areas in which semantics in a Web context plays an important role. The goal of the Semantic Web is to create a Web of knowledge and services in which the semantics of content is made explicit and content is linked to both other content and services. This network of knowledge-based functionality will weave together a large network of human knowledge, and make this knowledge machine-processable to support intelligent behaviour by machines. It will support novel applications allowing to combine content from heterogeneous sites in unforeseen ways and support enhanced matching between users needs and content.

Creating such an interlinked Web of knowledge which spans unstructured, RDF as well as multimedia content and services requires the collaboration of many disciplines, including but not limited to: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Database and Information Systems, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Multimedia, Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science.

In addition to the research and in-use tracks, we have furthermore introduced two special tracks this year, putting particular emphasis on inter-disciplinary research topics and areas that show the potential of exciting synergies for the future.

Call For Papers: 4th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence – Technologies and Applications (ICCCI 2012)

4th International Conference on Computational Collective Intelligence –
Technologies And Applications (ICCCI 2012)

28-30 November 2012, Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam

Proceedings: Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) of Springer-Verlag

http://www.iccci2012.vn/
e-mail: iccci@pwr.wroc.pl

ABOUT
—–

ICCCI 2012 is an international scientific conference for research in the field of Computational Collective Intelligence (CCI), to be held on 28-30 November, 2012 in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam.

Computational Collective Intelligence is most often understood as an AI sub-field dealing with soft computing methods which enable making group decisions or processing knowledge among autonomous units acting in distributed environments. Web-based systems, social networks and multi-agent systems very often need these tools for working out consistent knowledge states, resolving conflicts and making decisions.

The aim of this conference is to provide an internationally respected forum for scientific research in the computer-based methods of collective intelligence and their applications in (but not limited to) such fields as group decision making, consensus computing, knowledge integration, semantic web, social networks and multi-agent systems.

ICCCI 2012 is organized by University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University HCM and Wroclaw University of Technology in Poland.

ICCCI 2012 is organized in cooperation with IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Computational Collective Intelligence and International Society of Applied Intelligence.

SCOPE
—–

The scope of the conference includes:

– Methodological, theoretical and practical aspects of computational collective intelligence such as group decision making, collective action coordination, knowledge integration, understood as the form of intelligence that emerges from the collaboration and competition of many individuals (artificial and/or natural).
– The application of multiple computational intelligence technologies such as fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, neural systems, consensus theory, etc., to support human and other collective intelligence and creation of new forms of CCI in natural and/or artificial systems.

Three subfields of application of computational intelligence technologies to support various forms of collective intelligence are of special attention but are not the only ones: semantic web (as an advanced tool increasing collective intelligence), social network analysis (as the field targeted to the emergence of new forms of CCI), and multiagent systems (as a computational and modeling paradigm especially tailored to capture the nature of CCI emergence in populations of autonomous individuals).

Apart of the Main Track, including general aspects of computational collective intelligence, the conference will offer Special Sessions and Workshop for selected topics in the conference scope. Also, there will be Doctoral Track offering students opportunity to exchange experience and to discuss both work in progress and almost finished dissertations.

ABSTRACT
——–
Organizations collect vast amounts of information on individuals, and at the same time they  have access to ever-increasing levels of computational power. Although this  conjunction of information and power provides great benefits to society, it also threatens  individual privacy. As a result legislators for many countries try to regulate the use and the disclosure of confidential information. Various privacy regulations (such as USA Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Canadian Standard Association’s Model Code for the Protection of Personal Information, Australian Privacy Amendment Act, etc.) have been enacted in many countries all over the world. Data privacy and protecting individuals’ anonymity have become a mainstream avenue for research. While privacy is a topic discussed everywhere, data anonymity recently established itself as an emerging area of computer science. Its goal is to produce useful computational solutions for releasing data, while providing scientific guarantees that the identities and other sensitive information of the individuals who are the subjects of the data are protected.

The PAIS’12 Workshop will provide an open yet focused platform for researchers and practitioners from computer science and other fields that are interacting with computer science in the privacy area such as statistics, healthcare informatics, and law to discuss and present current research challenges and advances in data privacy and anonymity research. We welcome original research papers that present novel research ideas, position papers that discuss new technology trends and provide new insights into this area, integrative papers that present interdisciplinary research in the privacy area, as well as industry  papers that share practical experiences.

Call For Papers: Transnational Social Networks (TSN 2012)

Transnational Social Networks (TSN 2012)

Deadline for submission of proposals
15th January 2012
For the focused topic on “Transnational Social Networks” of the journal “Transnational
Social Review – A Social Work Journal” (TSR) the guest editors (Andreas Herz and Claudia
Olivier) invite submissions of proposal abstracts.

I. Research Interest of the Focused Topic
Research in transnationalism has proliferated in the last twenty years. Transnational studies focus on the border-crossing activities of individuals, migrant groups, corporations and social movements. A central innovation of the concept “transnationalism” depends on a perspective which refers to cross-border relationships and networks (Mau 2010). Relational ideas underly transnational studies from the beginning (Glick Schiller, Basch & Blanc Szanton 1995; Vertovec 2009), because the investigation of social networks helps to understand the crosscutting transfer of ideas, transnational support as well as the formation of opinions and lifestyles beyond nation states. The social network perspective also enables an analysis of how the embeddedness in transnational social relations represents both, constraints and opportunities for social action in reconstructing relational power and dependency conditions. Transnational social networks are organized in different ways, which range from informal contacts to formalized frameworks. They can be studied with methodological approaches ranging from qualitative and ethnographical studies, mixed-methods, to quantitative approaches by using various methods, e.g.social network analysis (SNA). To illustrate the relevance of transnational social networks in social work theoretical or empirical contributions are invited for the third issue on “Transnational Social Networks” of the journal TSR. Contributions should focus on social relations or social structures of individuals’, communities’ or organizations’ interaction that cross nation-state boundaries and are located in more than one national context.
Abstracts are invited for original articles with the following foci:

* Social support
* Social capital
* Interlocking directorates
* Epistemic communities
* Knowledge circulation
* Learning-, educational- and development-processes
* Diffusion, interlinks and power relations

“Transnational Social Networks” can be brought up in the following contexts:
* Migration and mobility
* Family and households
* Development cooperation,
* Science
* Entrepreneurship
* Media
* Labor

II. Concept and Objective of the Journal TSR
“Transnational Social Review – A Social Work Journal” is a peer reviewed journal and offers an international forum to discuss social work and related disciplines and professions from a transnational perspective. It responds to the challenges resulting from the  increasing impact of transnational social, political, economic, and cultural processes and  structures upon social work. The journal aims at the transnational opening and  development of social work and related fields. Its main objective is to open perspectives for making the concept of transnationalism part of the knowledge structure and practice, in  order to extend and transform the legitimation, concepts, research, and methods which to date are primarily nationally-focused.

III. Frequency and Structure of the Journal TSR
TSR appears twice a year by an international team of editors and board members at Barbara Budrich Publishers in Germany. The journal pursues an interdisciplinary approach and fits the criteria of the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). All articles undergo rigorous peer reviews, based on initial editor screening and anonymous reviews by two or more referees to ensure the high quality of the journal. TSR is available online as well as in print. Its main publishing language is English but the online version offers the option to include versions of the contributions in the language in which they are originally written.
Each issue consists of a cluster of articles on a focused topic as well as general articles and book reviews. The online version additionally includes an open-access section of brief,  up-todate reports on research, teaching, social policies, practices and everyday-life concerning the transnational worlds of social work.
